Gaudí's works in Barcelona

Born in Reus in 1851, Antoni Gaudí moved to Barcelona in 1868, and from that time always had a close relationship with the city. It was there that he discovered the secrets of architecture from the hand of the most prominent figures of the period and became friends with some of the people that would help him establish himself as one of the great references of modernist architecture.

Gaudí developed most of his professional career in Barcelona, in such a way that the Catalan capital is home to most of the architect's projects. Amongst the most important works of Gaudí in Barcelona are the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia, Casa Batlló, La Pedrera, Park Güell, Casa Vicens, Torre Bellesguard and Güell Palace, architectural masterpieces that demonstrate the creative ingenuity of an architect in constant evolution.

His first works in Barcelona

Preceded by commissions such as the lampposts of Plaza Reial, the first of Gaudí's buildings in Barcelona was Casa Vicens, a single family home located in the town of Gràcia, which around the late 19th century was still an independent municipality. With this work, Gaudí, anticipated the explosion of colours and shapes typical of Modernisme, combining influences from Muslim art with many references to the natural world.

Muslim influence is also present in the Finca Güell, Eusebi Güell's first commission to Gaudí, consisting of an ensemble of pavilions next to the summer home that the powerful industrialist owned in the Pedrables district.

The architect's earlier period includes Güell Palace, which is considered one of Gaudí's most important works in Barcelona. Located in the vicinity of the Rambla, this medieval-inspired building was commissioned by Gaudí's main patron, Eusebi Güell, and combines an austere exterior with an exuberant interior design, in the image of Italian Renaissance palaces.

The influence of the architectonic styles of the past is also present in the Colegio Teresiano and Torre Bellesguard, later projects in which Gaudí combined his fascination for medieval forms with more personal resources, such as the use of the parabolic arch and the spires crowned by four-armed crosses.

Gaudí’s most important works

In his mature period, Gaudí shook off external influences and developed a totally personal style, based on the observation of nature. This period includes Casa Calvet, La Pedrera and Casa Batlló, the only buildings designed by Gaudí in the Eixample, the extensive urban development that took place when Barcelona's medieval walls were torn down. The three works demonstrate the architect's evolution.

Awarded the best building in Barcelona of 1900, Casa Calvet still shows the influence of Historicist trends, with its façade incorporating numerous details from baroque architecture. As for the Casa Batlló, it was a complete break away from the past, by combining maximum functionalism with a daring universe inspired by the natural world.

Converted into the architect's last civil work, La Pedrera supposed the confirmation of the creative liberty reached by Gaudí, who designed a structure that was so innovative that it was misunderstood at the time.

Park Güell also dates back to this time, a development plan devised by Gaudí in collaboration with Eusebi Güell on a site on the city outskirts that to this day is continuously analysed due to its original iconography. It is one of Gaudí's most important works. The Gardens of the Fontaine de Nimes and the Ruins of the Temple of Apollo in Delfi are some of the possible sources of inspiration for this fantastical place, where references to Classical Greece combine with an enigmatic iconography inspired by the history of Catalonia and Christian symbolism.

As for the Sagrada Familia, Gaudí also left his evidence of his stylistic evolution. The architect started to work on the construction of the temple in his early period, and was in charge of the project until his final days, which meant he was able to introduce into the work all the ideas that he had been perfecting over the years. For this reason, the basilica is considered the definitive compendium of Gaudí's architecture.
