An icon of modernity, Pablo Picasso is considered to be the most influential artist of the 20th century. Incredibly talented, the creator of Les Demoiselles d'Avignon and Guernica broke with all the cultural conventions of the time and established new aesthetic paradigms that marked a turning point in the history of art.

Picasso's talent was already apparent in his childhood and adolescence, when he learnt to master the techniques of the great masters of painting. In a gradual way, the artist worked on his own pictorial language, in a complex process of experimentation that led to the creation of Cubism, the revolutionary style with which Picasso became world famous.

This book published by Dosde gathers the main works of Picasso exhibited in the Museo Picasso of Barcelona, a centre of reference in order to understand the origin of one of the most versatile artists in history. The book starts with Picasso's first artistic forays up to his mature works, passing through the Blue Period, the Rose Period and Cubism. This way, the reader obtains a complete overview of the great Malagan painter, a unique artist that left an indelible print on modern art.

The Biography of Picasso

Born in 1881 in Malaga (Andalusia), Pablo Ruiz Picasso is considered to be the most revolutionary and versatile artist of the twentieth century due to his immense creative capacity, which allowed him to overcome all the cultural conventions of the time and determine the evolution of the arts.

The painter's talent was more than apparent from childhood and adolescence, when, under the tutelage of his father, he learned to master the techniques of the great masters. Progressively, the artist began to move away from parental influence in his search for new forms of artistic expression. This objective resulted in his move to Paris, where he came into contact with avant-garde movements and finally broke with tradition.

Having become a world celebrity, the painter became a recluse in his last years in southern France, but far from terminating his career, he continued to work with great intensity to the end, leaving behind, an extensive legacy, which was as valuable as it was influential.

The paintings of Picasso in the Museo Picasso in Barcelona

Pablo Picasso always maintained a special relationship with Barcelona, where he first came into contact with the artistic avant-garde, so the idea of creating a space there, dedicated to his work, immediately counted with his involvement. However, it was his close friend and personal secretary, Jaume Sabartés, who after years of negotiations, reached an agreement in 1960 with the municipal authorities to set up the museum.

Sabartés himself donated his entire collection of Picasso's paintings to the centre, which formed the basis around which the museum was organised. As for Picasso, in 1970 he gave the museum the works that had been kept in his family home in Barcelona.

The Picasso Museum of Barcelona was initially planned in the Berenguer dAguilar Palace, a gothic style building located on one of the most emblematic streets of the old town. Successive enlargements of the collection and its changing functional requirements meant the institution had to enlarge its facilities. Thus, from 1970 four palaces were added to the first property and a research center was then constructed in the year 2011 in order to create an architectural arrangement that occupies an area measuring ??approximately 13,000 square metres.
