As I recall, the photography and graphics were good. The text, as I recall, was good as far as it went. More would have been welcome.

Buildings and monuments in Barcelona

One of the great assets of Barcelona is its abundant art and architectural heritage. Associated to the development of major cultural trends, the city boasts numerous monuments that are internationally recognised and which are a reflection of the different creative periods experimented through its history.

The Gothic Quarter is home to the majority of the most important places and important historical buildings of the Old City. Barcelona Cathedral (the Catedral de Santa Eulalia), the Plaza del Rey, Calle del Bisbe and the Basílica de Santa María del Pi are just some of the key places of cultural interest.

As for the Raval district, it boasts a diverse heritage that encompasses medieval remains to fine examples of contemporary architecture. The neighbourhood includes buildings such as Santa Creu Hospital, constructed in the fifteenth century, along with the Museum of Contemporary Art, inaugurated in the year 1995 in La Plaça dels Àngels.

The maritime zone of the city is home to works from a variety of different periods. Ranging from the Monument to Columbus –designed by Gaietà Buigas for the Universal Exhibition of 1888– to buildings of a marked sculptural character, such as the Hotel W Barcelona designed by Ricardo Bofill, Marenostrum Tower, created by architects Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliablue or the monumental sculpture of a golden fish designed by Frank O. Gehry.

Modernist Barcelona

If there is an architectonic movement that has left a mark on Barcelona, then it would be Modernisme, a new artistic trend that emerged in the late 19th century that stood out for its ornamental richness, dynamism, predominance of curved lines, taste for asymmetry and admiration for the natural world. The Modernist route of Barcelona includes buildings such as Hospital de Sant Pau, Casa Lleó i Morera, Casa Amatller or Palau de la Música Catalana, amongst others. Architects such as Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Lluis Domènech i Montaner and Enric Sagnier were some of the great minds behind these works of enormous architectural value.

But it was undoubtedly Antoni Gaudí who was the maximum exponent of Modernisme, an architect of international fame. Barcelona treasures many of his great works, such as Casa Batlló, La Pedrera, the Teresian College, Palau Güell and of course his masterpiece, the Sagrada Familia.
