About the book Casa Batlló

Devised as an abundant display of enthusiasm, Casa Batlló is one of the most original artistic creations of Antoni Gaudí, who converted a simple refurbishment project into a universal work of art packed with fantasy and movement.

Located on Barcelona's Passeig de Gràcia, this apartment building –declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco in 2005– was commissed by the powerful textile entrepreneur Josep Batlló, who contracted Gaudí in 1904 to design a house that would earn the admiration of the bourgeoisie of the time. In full creative maturity, the architect demonstrated his ingenuity and capacity for innovation, introducing revolutionary construction solutions and a great variety of allegorical details inspired by nature that provide Casa Batlló with its thought-provoking and avant-garde appearance.

This book published by Dosde covers in depth all the aspects related to the Casa Batlló, situating the book in the historical context in which it was devised, exploring its rich symbolic significance and analysing each one of the architectonic peculiarities of one of the most visited.

There is nothing lacking in these books. I really liked them. If I had to say something I'd say that the photos of some of the details of the buildings are a little bit small.

Gaudí's Casa Batlló, the origin of a unique building

In the mid-nineteenth century, Barcelona underwent a dramatic expansion following the demolition of its walls, prompted by the demographic growth of a city that was in the throes of industrialisation.

With the implementation of the Pla Cerdà urban development project, whose grid structure led to the Eixample district, the cityscape took on a homogeneous appearance. However, in 1891, new by-laws allowed for more flexibility in building design and as a consequence the bourgeoisie demanded more ornamental and exuberant façades for their properties, wanting to use architecture as a way of reflecting their splendour and success.

Catalan Modernism (Modernisme) proved to be the perfect vehicle to shape the aspirations of Barcelona’s wealthiest citizens, responsible for the transformation of the streets of the Eixample in a period of experimentation for the main architects of the time. The most renowned was Antoni Gaudí, who was commissioned by textile entrepreneur Josep Batlló to construct a house on Passeig de Gràcia, the city’s most prestigious avenue. Combining strict functionality with maximum formal audacity, Gaudí created a work that was replete with original architectural solutions and which converted into one of Barcelona's icons.

Casa Batlló inside

The imaginative and thought-provoking appearance of the main façade and the common areas of Antoni Gaudí's Casa Batlló was also reflected by the sumptuous interior of the property for the large Batlló family residing on the building's main floor.

In line with his previous residential projects, the Catalan architect devised rooms with rather large dimensions, in accordance with the family's elevated social status and the necessities of the tenants.

Apart from creating a spacious feel, the Catalan architect also made apparent his admiration for the natural world by means of the organically inspired design of the different rooms that made up the property, distinguished by their ornamental richness, their formal dynamism and the predominance of curved lines.
