The history of the Monasterio de Piedra

The Monastery of Santa María de Piedra, located in the locality of Nuévalos, was founded in 1195 by monks from the monastery of Poblet, who were attracted by a landscape perfect for spiritual retreat and which was suitable for fulfilling the strict rules of the Cistercians, an order founded in France during the 11th century.

The monks lived in the abbey for more than 600 years, until 1835, when in the framework of the liberal revolutions that were taking place in Spain, the so-called "Mendizábal Disentailment" deprived the Church of its assets. This led to the monastery being definitively abandoned by the monk community. The recuperation of the monument was instigated by the Muntadas family, who were responsible in the 19th century for transforming the old abbey into a top recreation and tourist centre.

Visiting the Monasterio de Piedra

The Monasterio de Piedra is today an important tourist destination in the Community of Aragon. It combines a monumental zone of great historical value with a spectacular landscape, the natural park of the Monasterio de Piedra.

From an architectural point of view, the medieval monastery was constructed according to the Cistercian rules of austerity and functionality. However, the successive enlargements and refurbishments of the Cistercian abbey have led to a rich monumental ensemble that brings together different styles: from the Gothic to the Baroque, not forgetting the Mudejar and Renaissance genres.

The ancient monastery has since the mid 20th century been home to a hotel which takes up part of its rooms and has converted into an important economic force for the region, since its great tourist appeal makes it one of the most visited places in Aragon.
