The history of Seville

The origins of Seville are surrounded by legends, such as the one that claims it was founded by Hercules, the legendary hero of Antiquity, but most scientific research agrees that the foundation of the city, on the banks of the Guadalquivir, was the work of the Phoenicians and occurred around the 8th century BC. Its consolidated importance as a trade and financial centre increased when, following the discovery of America, the city was chosen to accommodate the House of Trade, created in 1503 to control trade and relations with the new world.

After a period of decline between the 17^th and 18^th centuries owing to factors such as plague epidemics and the crisis of the monarchy, Seville from the 19th century began to recover its former vitality until converting into one of the most important cities in Europe. At present, its extensive artistic and architectonic heritage, the result of a great melting-pot of cultures, is highly attractive to the thousands of people that visit it every year.

The architecture of Seville

Since its very beginnings, Seville has constantly evolved architecturally, largely due to the different civilizations that have inhabited there. The old town in Seville is also home to the main monuments of the city, amongst which include the Cathedral, the Archbishop’s Palace, the Royal Alcazar and the General Archive of the Indies.

Then there are the numerous temples, public buildings and large stately homes that are material proof of the gold, silver and other merchandise that flowed into Seville from the American continent between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries, and which went towards hiring the most prestigious architects and artists of the Spanish Renaissance and Baroque.
