Modernism books

Developed between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, coinciding with a period of far-reaching technological and social changes, Catalan Modernism or Modernisme was a unique artistic movement that left an undelible mark on Barcelona architecture.

The Catalan Modernism books published by Dosde will bring you closer to the most emblematic works of this artistic trend. Within their pages, you will be able to explore the legacy of the major names of modernist architecture, such as Gaudí, Puig i Cadalfach and Domènech i Montaner, and find out about the key elements of a cultural movement distinguished by its aesthetic sensibility and renovating spirit.

The characteristics of Modernism

Considered the Catalan equivalent of Art Nouveau, Catalan Modernism (also known as Modernisme) sought to transfer beauty to all elements of daily life. Just as the books on Modernism by Dosde explain, the main characteristics of Catalalan Modernism were the use of nature as a source of inspiration, the emphasis on craftsmanship, the taste for symbolic language and the fascination for female figures. The use of the curved line and the fascination with exotic cultures also characterized this new artistic genre which in the north of Europe was developed by artists such as Gustav Klimt and Alfons Mucha.

Due to its integrating vision of art, Catalan Modernism ended up influencing all variety of disciplines, such as literature, music and sculpture. In modernist painting, Santiago Rusiñol and Ramon Casas are figures that particularly stand out, who were the driving forces behind the tavern Els Quatre Gats, while in architecture Modernisme reached its maximum splendour with the likes of Antoni Gaudí, Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Lluis Domènech i Montaner and Josep Maria Jujol, who completely transformed the urban landscape of Barcelona with works such as La Pedrera, Casa Batlló, Casa Amatller, Casa Lleó i Morera, Palau de la Música Catalana and Hospital de Sant Pau, universal icons of modernist architecture that are analysed in these books on museums and monuments.

The total art

Modernism aspired to provide aesthetic value to all objects that were typical of daily life. The movement gave great prominence to craftsmen, who skilfully combined traditional artisanal techniques with the latest technological innovations in order to exploit the plastic potential of woodwork, ceramic work, iron and glasswork, amongst other materials shown in the books on Modernisme.

Descendents of families who had worked in the same workshops for generations, these specialists in the field of arts and crafts often worked closely with the modernist architects. Thanks to this interaction, decorative items and furnishings were perfectly integrated into the spaces for which they were intended, creating a fascinating and harmonious universe of textures, shapes and colours which can be discovered in these art books.

The reflection of a society

The creators of Modernisme counted on the unconditional support of the flourishing Catalan bourgeoisie, who used this movement to express their social and political aspirations. This meant that dozens of architects, sculptors and craftsmen could work with total liberty, giving free rein to their imagination in order to create unique modernist works that would end up converting into signs of identity of an era marked by its desire for progress and renewal.

These architecture books explore the relationship between the modernist artists and their clients, who were reponsible for a golden age in the city of Barcelona in which the industrial sector instigated an unprecedented urbanistic and cultural transformation.
