History of FC Barcelona

Admired by millions of sport fans, FC Barcelona is considered one of the best football teams in the world. The importance of the club is reflected by its numerous victories and its long history, packed with memorable moments.

Since its creation in the late 19th century, when football was still a minority sport in Europe, FC Barcelona was the destination of many of the best footballers in history, such as Josep Samitier, László Kubala, Johan Cruyff, Maradona, Ronaldinho and Leo Messi.

As well as the commitment to an attractive playing style, the presence of these legendary figures has allowed the club to enchain various periods of glory, triumphing in the most important competitions.

Who founded FC Barcelona?

The founder of FC Barcelona was Hans Gamper, a Swiss student who had settled in Barcelona in 1898 in order to learn Spanish. In his spare time, Gamper would often get together with other expatriates in order to play football, a sport from England whose popularity was spreading throughout the European continent.

Driven by his passion for football, in 1899 Gamper decided to found a club where he would be able to organise football matches on a regular basis, just as he had done a few years prior in his homeland.

Thus, that was the start of FC Barcelona's history, an institution that stood out for its social integration vocation and which enjoyed a steady growth in membership and admirers in order to become one of the main reference models of the nascent Barcelonan sporting world, thereby laying the foundations of a history studded with success.

Titles won by FC Barcelona

Since its foundation in 1899, Barcelona has managed to amass all the trophies possible, to the point that the club has become one of the teams that has won the most titles in the world.

Nationally, the club stands out for holding the record of triumphs in the Copa del Rey and the Supercopa of Spain. Likewise, FC Barcelona was also the first team to win the championship of the Spanish League, created in 1929.

As for international titles, FC Barcelona has accumulated four European Cups, the first of which was won in 1992 after beating Sampdoria. Likewise, Barcelona is the club with the most cups won in the tournaments of the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup, the Fairs Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.

To Barcelona's titles must be added the individual recogitions of their most emblematic players, sport legends that, thanks to their time in the club, managed to win titles such as the Ballon d'Or, the FIFA World Player and the European Golden Shoe.

The FC Barcelona stadium

The trajectory of FC Barcelona is indissociable from Camp Nou, the stadium in which the club definitively established itself in 1957. Francesc Miró-Sans –the first president of the club elected directly by the male members since the Civil War– commissioned the design of the site to architects Josep Soteras and Francesc Mitjans, who were assisted by Lorenzo García Barbón.

The initial deadline to build the stadium was actually eighteen months, but the construction work lasted much longer than expected due to various technical problems that also made the project substantially more expensive.

In order to foot the costs, the club had to borrow money, since the sale of the old Les Corts stadium (a key operation in the financing of the project) was delayed until the year 1966, nine years after the inauguration of Camp Nou.

Coinciding with the celebration of the 1982 World Cup, which involved the modernisation of the main Spanish stadiums, FC Barcelona carried out a remodelation of Camp Nou with the aim to increase its capacity and improve its services.

Thus, the seating capacity of the enclosure increased to the grand total of 120,000 spectators, a figure which at that time was only surpassed by the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro.

In 2014, the members of FC Barcelona approved (by means of a referendum) the plan to remodel Camp Nou and its surroundings. Two years later, the prestigious Japanese architecture studio Nikken Sekkei was awarded the tender.

When the refurbishment is completed, in 2021, according to Barça’s previsions, the stadium will be able to accommodate up to 105,053 spectators. The intervention will also allow the opening up of the stadium’s façade to the city, the protection of stands with a roof and better accessibility with lifts and escalators.
